The organisers of the Aug 1997 Vancouver conference in critical geography
are currently considering the question of inviting some guest speakers to
the conference. We'd appreciate some guidance on this.
a) Is it a good idea to bring in people on this basis? Are there, for
example, outside speakers who people would like to hear in a plenary? Or
does this set up certain hierarchies that we should be avoiding? If people
do come in as guest speakers, would it be preferable to also ensure that
they participate fully in the conference - eg through round table
discussion etc ?
b) If it -is- a good idea to invite certain people (and subsidise their
costs, of course), who or what should they be? Geographers?
Non-Geographers? From the Anglo-American world? Beyond? Academics?
Non-academics? Any specific names?
c) Any other thought?
PS: We will be circulating a final call for participation very soon, at
which time we need those interested to pay up, so we can plan
accomodation.
