I have recently been sent the following details of a conference on
'Empires and Identities' and thought it may be of interest to a number
of historical/cultural geographers.
"The Royal Historical Society is holding a two-day conference on the
theme of Empires and Identities since 1500 at the Institute of
Historical Research in London on 26, 27 September 1997. Sessions are
planned on metropolitan identities and empires, on 'creole' identities,
and on the formation of identities by non-European peoples under
colonial rule. Among those who will be delivering papers are John
Mackenzie, Shula Marks and Stanley Trapido, Francis Robinson, Mia
Rodriguez-Salgado and A. J. Stockwell, Dominic Lieven and Megan Vaughan.
We are also planning 'workshop' sessions on the theme for which we would
welcome offers of contributions from younger researchers. We would
particularly like to hear about proposals that relate to imperial
systems other than the British one.
Suggestions should be sent as soon as possible to the Society's Office
at University College, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT
Roy C. Bridges & P.J. Marshall"
