V. Saxer has written on the archangel Michael:
"Jalons pour servir a l'histoire du culte de l'archange Saint Michel en Orient
jusqu'a l'iconoclasme", in Noscere Sancta. Miscellanea in memoria di A. Amore.
Roma, 1985, pp.375-426.
A very interesting study of angels in patristic texts:
A. Recheis, Engel, Tod und Seelenreise, Rome, 1958.
On St Michael also: M. Rouche, "Le combat des saints anges et des demons. La
victoire de Saint Michel", in Santi e demoni nell'alto medioevo occidentale,
Settimane di studio...XXXVI, Spoleto, 1989, vol. I, pp.533-560.
In the volume 2 of the same Settimana di Spoleto, P. Dinzelbacher, "Der
Kampf der Heiligen mit den Da"monen", pp.647-695.
Good luck with all this,

I don't know to what extent this would be relevant to Early Mediaeval
Britain, but in the Talmud, Michael is the archangel who marches at the
head of the army of Israel (I think). He is thus a rather good saint for
those of a militaristic bent; Martin of Tours is disqualified for being a
pacifist and George disobeyed orders to follow the greater authority of
faith.

Sed signifer sanctus Michael
Repraesentet eas [sc.: animas] in aeternum
complete with wings and standard/(caduceus/Moses' rod):"signifer" for both
-- in planetary terms, the nearest to the Sun/Christ
