Michael definately appears in medieval tympana weighing souls - i can think
of an example in Bourges cathedral and souls are being weighed in
gislebertus' tympana in Autun as well, these are from the 12th and 13th
centuries
as for italian examples, slightly later, angels play a directive role in
last judgement scene in Giotto's Arena Chapel - but i'm not sure if you can
identify st MIchael specifically,
there is a Florentine St Michael altarpiece (mid-thirteenth century) -from
Sant'Angelico vico l'abate according to a very old slide in our collection
here which shows various acts of the angel, including fighting the devil i
think
>Michael also has a role in the Last Judgment - according to a painting I
>saw in Pisa - directing the sorting out of the blessed from the damned
>when the dead are raised. Is that common or peculiar to the painting in
>question?
