I work on the literary, linguistic and intellectual culture of the Italian
peninsula between about 1200 and about 1500. Among my principal interests
- almost inevitably I suppose - is Dante, and in 1994 I perpetrated a book
called *Dante and the Mystical Tradition: Bernard of Clairvaux in the
"Commedia"*, whose subtitle (chosen by me) is a better indication of its
contents (and my competence!) than its title (imposed by the publisher).
This and most of my publications draw heavily on the history of medieval
religion and its textual culture, and I have a broad theoretical interest
(not confined to the Middle Ages) in the intersection of language,
literature, religion, and ethics.
