ON-DEMAND PUBLISHING FOR LEARNING MATERIALS
The problems, benefits and technology of delivering and producing learning materials on demand.
This event is part of a rolling programme of one-day awareness seminars designed to improve understanding of and promote the uptake of, on-demand publishing technologies for the production of course readers, study packs and similar learning materials. The day will be of greatest benefit to learning resource managers, IT heads, academics, librarians, educational technologists and anybody with an intermediary role in bringing technological and resource-based solutions to higher education.
Over the past few years the expansion of higher education has put significant pressure on many aspects of University life, including the provision of adequate learning materials. Although that expansion has now reached a plateau the consequences are still evident in a number of ways, including the pressure on libraries, the greater dependence on course notes and handouts, the search for solutions through IT; and the need for partnerships to develop as a means of reducing costs.
On demand publishing has been mooted as one such solution, providing an opportunity to piece together text from different sources to create new publications. These can be made available either as packages "on demand" or electronically through facilities such as the World Wide Web. Such packages might include critical readings, journal articles, relevant exercises or exam questions and locally authored material. They may be used to support a course, as core or background reading or even represent the course itself.
The day will discuss the opportunities for on-demand publishing in higher education from a number of angles, including the technology, the economies, the pedagogic issues and whether indeed it will come about.
Project Phoenix's key objectives are to research and evaluate the technologies described above for screen and coursepack delivery of learning materials within their own institutions and how they can be applied to the HE community. Delegates will have an opportunity to hear about current developments, to sample the technology available and to join in a number of short discussion-based workshops. The Roadshows are part of Project Phoenix promotion and evaluation activities. Project Phoenix is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) as part of the Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib) in the On Demand Publishing area in response to the Follett report.
The Roadshows are organised by the Project Phoenix Consortium, SCOPE Consortium and sponsored by Rank Xerox.
