We are getting far enough from our starting point that I'll quit for
the day with this message and go watch Vanderbilt slaughter Notre Dame ...
Marc:
| I had in mind conneg along the lines of:
| Accept: */sgml; dtd="<fpi>", */sgml; dtd="<fpi>"...
I don't want to have to list all the DTDs I can handle when in fact I can
handle any DTD.
| The problem is that there might be many answers to a query that requests
| */sgml, and you don't want to get them all to determine which one you want.
Even if you do get them all, it's still going to be a smaller file than
most of the GIFs banging around the Net.

|
| I'd recommend this as a temporary measure until the larger problem of */sgml (I
| can handle either text or application; both have good arguments) conneg was
| solved.
If I were on the IESG I wouldn't allow crosscutting media types. Think
of how that would complicate content negotiation!

|
| The DC should be encodable in HTML (or even text/plain) for human readability.
Ah, something like
<dl><dt>Author</dt><dd>Albrecht Noth</dd> ?
That would not be automatically processable except by a human, as there
are many ways it could be done. Unless you want to specify a particular
style of markup.

|
| Assuming that the current DTD is vetted and ready to go (?), sure. Would there
| be more to do in that case than to drop a line to IANA or would a RFC be
| needed? Could that RFC be done outside of a wg?
I imagine so, and given the HTML experience it would be the only workable
method. But you'd still need */sgml or start crosscutting.
