********New Chief Executive for SCRAN************
The Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network has appointed its new
Chief Executive. He is Bruce Royan, currently Director of Information
Services at the University of Stirling.
Bruce Royan has worked in networked information systems since 1969, for
Post Office Telecom, the London Borough of Camden, the British Library
and the National Library of Scotland. In the mid 1980s he founded and
ran a national networking serviced in Singapore linking some 36
institutions and containing over 6 million records. His
responsibilities at the University of Stirling include the University
Art Collection, the Library, Academic Computing, Management Information
Systems and Media Services. Bruce's commitment to the broadcasting of
Scottish culture has extended to twice representing Singapore in
Scottish Country Dancing at the Jakarta Highland Games!
SCRAN is the first information technology project to be supported by the
Millennium Commission, which is providing 7.5 million Pounds Sterling
towards the total cost of 15 million pounds, and is a joint venture
between Scottish Museums Council, the National Museums of Scotland and the
Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Scotland.
Museums will apply for grants to make available in digital form the best
of their collections which will be freely accessible for educational
purposes in a multimedia form. This will not simply make the objects
available in isolation, but enable the public to access the wealth of
related scholarship which is what makes Scotland's museums such a valuable
educational resource.
The Chairman of SCRAN, Lady Balfour of Burleigh, said "It has taken much
time and effort to reach this stage of the Project, and the exciting
part is just beginning. I am delighted that Bruce will be helping us to
build upon the heritage of Scotland to create this important cultural
and educational resource".
