I've been asked to get involved with a 'community mapping' initiative in
central Vancouver, involving academic and community groups. The plan is to
come up with oral, visual and written images of one neighbourhood through a
community based process. The goals seem to be community building, the
promotion of inter-generational and cross cultural understanding, the
collective identification of those physical and social elements that are
important to residents, and the nurturing of a sense of collective history.
I know that there have been some similar initiatives elsewhere - for
example, amongst English parishes etc. Does anyone have any knowledge of
such 'mapping' projects, or of any literature?
Thanks a lot.
