Colleagues are hopefully aware that teh RGS-IBG Council set up a working
group to work on the development of guidelines for dealings with
corporate benefactors to be Chaired by Sir Crispin Tickell. The precise
terms of reference of this group are to be discussed at its first meeting
in September, but I hope that they will include a broader remit to move
towards the establishment of an ethics policy for the Society. I am acting
as Secretary of the Group, and am busy collating a range of different
ethics policies from learned societies and professional bodies. If anyone
has copies of such policies, or of guidelines used by other societies
in their dealings with financial supporters, I would be very grateful
if they could send them to me, so that I can provide the Working Group
with as much information as possible at its first meeting.
Just in case anyone out there is concerned about the apparently top-down
nature of this initiative, rest assured that any draft policy document
will be widely circulated within the Society and to Research Groups so
that we can have maximum feedback!
Please let me have any documentation, or other comments before 1st September.
Many thanks
