As part of its MODELS <URL:http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/models/> project UKOLN
has been looking at various aspects of distributed library services.
In this context we held a joint workshop with the OCLC Office of Research
which examined metadata issues, in particular looking at the Dublin Core,
its implementation and deployment issues. A major outcome was a proposal
-- named the Warwick Framework -- for aggregating 'packages' of metadata.
There will always be multiple metadata formats for various reasons and
this gives a framework for combining them for interchange.
A report on the workshop and its outcomes as well as some other papers on
metadata issues are included in the current issue of D-Lib Magazine
(July/August 1996).
The home page of D-lib in the UK is:

This issue also contains articles on the US Digital Library Initiative
projects.
The MODELS workshops are supported by JISC through the Electronic
Libraries Programme.
