Last month I sent out the following request:
>I'm interested in hearing from anyone who
>has had experience, or is considering the use,
>of Java for library and/or information retrieval
>applications.
>
>I will summarise replies for the list.
>
>Hazel Hall
>From the responses I received it appears that
quite a few of us have witnessed the media
interest and would like to know more. As far
as practical applications are concerned staff
at Cambridge University Press have written code
to allow hierarchical searching over subject areas
and the EEVL project based at Heriot-Watt University
uses Java as one of the tools for building
a gateway to web sources in engineering.
I have also been reading around the topic and it would
appear that in the field of library and information
science the most obvious applications for Java
are in information retrieval.
This month's Information World Review includes
an article on Java (which I have not yet seen).
Last week a message to the LIS-IIS list advertised
a half day seminar on Java at Libtech on Wed 4th September.
Three speakers will discuss the latest Java developments;
a consultant's perspective and the use of Java for
intergrated information retrieval. Bookings can be made
through Geraldine Doherty at the Institute of Information
Scientists - 0171 831 8003. This may be the place to
learn more.
