Dear Friends,
Greetings from Manila.
When we talked in Istanbul about rapid communications through our network for
emergency cases, I never thought the Philippines would be the first country
to need help.
On June 15 (so a day after the HABITAT II covenant was signed in Istanbul),
President Ramos told the mayors of Metro Manila he wanted 16,000 squatter
families removed from Manila before the Asia Pacific Economic Conference
(APEC) meeting here in November. They are "eyesores" and have to be removed,
the president said, along with garbage, graffiti, street children and
beggars.
The removal has already begin. June 26-28, 200 poor families were roughly
and forcefully evicted in downtown Manila.
The squatters are being evicted from roadside spots that can be seen by the
important visitors due in November, including Pres. Clinton, et.al.
The government is knowingly violating our law RA 7279 called the Urban
Development and Housing Act of 1992 that requires adequate relocation for all
families evicted from government land. The government is violating also, of
course the recent Global Plan of Action signed in Istanbul.
Can you help circulate among our friends a request for letters and telegrams
to President Ramos (President Fidel V. Ramos, Malacanang Palace, Manila).
Ask him to stop these action that violate local and international law. The
more letters and telegrams, faxes, etc., the better.
If you have questions, please contact me at telephone no. 63-2-9202434.

Very Sincerely,
DENIS MURPHY
