Humanities Computing Unit
The Humanities Computing Unit (HCU) is based at Oxford University Computing
Services and provides high-level support for all the humanities faculties
within the University, as well as housing several national and international
projects (e.g. CTI Centre for Textual Studies, the Oxford Text Archive, and the
British National Corpus). It currently has three vacancies which it would like
to fill:
ASSISTANT IT SUPPORT OFFICER
RS1B scale (14,317 - 18,294) for Academic-Related Staff.
Fixed-term appointment for one year in the first instance
The person appointed will take particular responsibility for IBM PC support
and advice, and for maintenance and expansion of Humanities World Wide Web
servers. In addition he or she will be expected to provide additional backup
support for the Centre for Humanities Computing's training and support
activities for staff and postgraduates in the relevant faculties and
sub-faculties.
Applicants should preferably have a humanities or social sciences degree, and
should be able to demonstrate expertise in two or more of the following: PCs
and PC networks; WWW and HTML; specialist software for humanities and social
science applications; good presentation skills. They must enjoy working in a
team and be able to communicate with people from all levels of the University.
Closing date for receipt of completed applications is 28 June 1996. Interviews
will be held during week commencing 8 July.
RESEARCH OFFICER
CTI Centre for Textual Studies
RS1A Scale (14,317-21,519) for Academic-Related staff
Fixed-term appointment for one year in the first instance
The CTI (Computers in Teaching Initiative) Centre for Textual Studies
promotes the use of computers in the teaching of literature (all
languages), linguistics, theology, classics, philosophy, film studies,
theatre arts and drama. The Centre publishes a regular newsletter and a
biennial Resources Guide for UK academics in higher education, visits
departments and organises workshops. The Centre also maintains an
extensive World Wide Web site at http://www.ox.ac.uk/ctitext/
The Centre is seeking a to appoint a research officer at the lower end of
the scale for a period of one year in the first instance, and applicants
should be educated to first degree level in a related subject. The
successful applicant will have an academic background in a humanities
discipline supported by the Centre combined with a demonstrable interest
in computer applications for the humanities. Experience in print or
online publishing, teaching within higher education, or Internet resources
would be an advantage. The appointed person will be expected to assist in
all aspects of the Centre's work.

COMPUTING OFFICER
RS1B/RS1A (14,317-18,294/14,317-21,519) for Academic-Related Staff
Fixed-term appointment for one year in the first instance
The person appointed to the post will provide technical support for all
electronic textual resources of the HCU, with an initial emphasis on
developing the Oxford Text Archive's online services.
Candidates should be educated to first degree level or equivalent, and should
be able to demonstrate awareness and experience of the creation, storage, and
retrieval of electronic texts in a networked academic environment. They should
have detailed experience of Unix text processing software, and a working
knowledge of Windows. Preference will be given to candidates with practical
knowledge of SGML, and/or developing applications using C++.
