In need of a Tonic? Netskills is pleased to announce "TONIC" a
WWW-based interactive tutorial.
TONIC 'The Online Netskills Interactive Course' is a World Wide
Web-based course on using the Internet. The course uses the
World Wide Web (WWW) as a medium because it is one of the most
widely-used Internet services which people will encounter, and
because its flexibility makes it a powerful learning tool.
Previously known as 'Internet for Everyone', this course is available
from the Netskills Home Page or at the following URL:
http://www.netskills.ac.uk/TONIC/
TONIC is an easy to understand, structured course, offering
step-by-step, practical guidance on major Internet topics.
The course as a whole is intended for beginners to networking who
have some familiarity with computers. Users can be referred to it in
order to help familiarise themselves with using the Internet, and the
course might be used to complement other forms of training.
TONIC provides an introduction to the Internet and computer networks
in general, describing and illustrating the main software tools for
navigating the networks. However, these tools are only a means to an
end, the end being the wealth of information and communication
resources offered via the networks. The course looks at types and
examples of networked information, at the means for searching that
information, and at the communication facilities and resources on
the net.
Much of the content is based on the training materials produced by the
ITTI Network Training Materials Project. Additional interactive elements
such as the self-assessment tests were produced originally with
funding from UCISA/JISC under the scheme to fund ongoing
maintenance of ITTI products.
The grants involved were administered by the University of Newcastle.
TONIC was originally authored by Margaret Isaacs (now at the
University of Glasgow) and the programmer was Lim Peng-Chuan. The
tutorial has been revised and updated, and is currently being maintained
as part of Netskills (an eLib project).
Acceptable Use
TONIC has been developed for the UK Higher Education community
with central funding. It may currently be used freely for non-commercial
academic purposes.
