JOURNALONE (tm)
Press Release
April 18, 1996
Palo Alto, CA. April 17. The ForeQuest Company announced
today the impending release of the JournalOne (tm) server for
publishing large publications on the World Wide Web.
"If a publisher has been waiting for the water to get warm before
publishing on the Web, now is certainly the time," said John Sweat,
at the helm of ForeQuest operations. "Until now, publishers have
had no confident way of making money from selling subscriptions
on the Web. In JournalOne, publishers have their answer."
ForeQuest offers JournalOne as a turnkey solution to publishers. In
the JournalOne Partner Program, ForeQuest makes the JournalOne
programming API's available to developers of Web publications.
"We believe the best way to establish this technology is to provide it
to everyone who can use it -- in turnkey form to publishers, and in
API form to developers."
The JournalOne server performance is optimized on a proprietary
networked client/server hardware configuration. Based on the
proven ForeQuest Publishing System (tm), the JournalOne server
includes the hardware and software needed to deliver a journal (or
other periodical) on the World Wide Web, and have paying
subscribers online. Publishers set subscription prices, and readers
can subscribe and pay with credit cards on the Web in completely
secure, encrypted transactions.
Furthermore, institutional subscribers can purchase subscription
rights to a limited or unlimited number of simultaneous sessions to
the electronic journal (according to the policy of the publisher).
The publisher may use JournalOne to deliver an electronic
publication using all current Web technologies. Editorial staff can
construct the publication with PDFs or HTML. ForeQuest also
offers separate translation software for producing HTML from
various prepress electronic formats.
Pricing for JournalOne is competitive, aggressive and flexible. "With
JournalOne, we hope to deliver a solution which will be affordable
to the great majority of publishers, and make them money by virtue
of JournalOne's electronic transaction and access control
technology," said Mara Velasco, sales manager.
ForeQuest's innovative technology, complete with online payment
and collection capabilities, enables publishers to be effective and
profitable in the electronic marketplace. Readers, too, benefit from
advanced personalized Web services and research tools, easy
accessibility, and customized subscription platforms. The electronic
publishing market holds enormous potential that can be tapped with
the right tool: JournalOne.
