Thanks for this document. I agree with the recommendation
regarding HTML 2 and HTML 3. One issue is how to ensure that
documents conform to the standard or proposed standard.
I regularly use the HTML Validation Service mirrored at HENSA
(see http://www.hensa.ac.uk/html-val-svc/). I've recently started
to include a pointer to the service from my HTML documents,
to save having to cut and paste URLs (based on an idea I got
from Jon Knoght). For example see:
http://www.netskills.ac.uk/staff/kelly/kelly.further.html
and click on the icon at the bottom of the page.
There are other useful tools and services available. For example
the Weblint service (see
http://www.khoral.com/staff/neilb/weblint/lintform.html)
comments on HTML style (e.g. use of ALT attributes in <IMG> tags,
avoiding "Click here", etc.), Doctor HTML (see
http://imagiware.com/RxHTML.cgi) which includes an HTML-aware
spell-checker.
Access to these service can be slow. Is it worth
installing/developing such services for hosting in the UK?
Comments?
