The following is from Neil Smith concerning the Vancouver
conference.
Neil: I hope it is OK that I have forwarded this to the crit-geog
list - not everyone on it gets leftgeog. Cheers. Joe

I would be all for this conference. I am grateful to people in Vancouver for
thinking about pulling it together. I think it is a vital next step beyond
the "forum" we have via e-mail. In my vision, graduate students would be the
core of the enterprise. This of course presents immediate financial problems
and realities, but I think it would be best to proceed on the assumption that
whatever the realities, we will be able collectively to find ways of
subbsidizing graduate student travel. This issue could well be the crux of
whether an international critical geography group thrives or not. From
national; level grants to research funds to individula faculty members
subsidizing student travel -- we have to do it. I volunteer to the Vacouver
group to help with some aspect of organization.
