.....CALL FOR PAPERS.....
- MULTICULTURAL GEOGRAPHIES -
RGS/IBG Annual Conference, Exeter 1997
a session co-sponsored by the Historical Geography and Social & Cultural
Geography Research Groups
In recent years, the work of writers such as Doreen Massey, Stuart Hall and
Paul Gilroy has opened up histories, places, communities, and identities as
entities which cannot be understood outside of webs of connections
stretching over considerable expanses of space and time. Thus, room has
been made for geographers convinced by arguments about the 'extroverted'
natures of these 'things' to make critical contributions to public debates
about 'multiculturalism' and its geographies. The aim of this session,
then, is to bring together various academics and activists who are involved
in highlighting not only what has been 'wrong' with the politics of
'class', 'race', 'ethnicity', 'gender', 'sexuality' at work in various
places at various times, but also how these can be, and have been, worked
out differently in the formation of new alliances, new identities, new
ethnicities.
Possible foci include:
social policy - cultural policy - heritage - music and dance - education
science - performance/art - commodification - creative writing - history
We envisage three modules in which papers will be presented and a fourth
module which will open out the debate through a 'round-table' discussion
and/or workshop.
We welcome comments and suggestions concerning how this session might work.
We would like those wishing to become part of it to send an abstract of
approximately 100 words to one of us by June 1st.
