>Dear Chris
I do a couple of sessions in Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. All the LVA's
(Low visual aids) magnify the image so that it is larger on the retina,
being spread over the para-macular area. At the bottom end you have various
magnifying glasses and it is very important with these to have a good light
close to (60 Watt from an angle-poise is better than 1000 Watt on a high
ceiling because of the inverse square law). Higher up there are the closed
circuit television systems which cost from £800 to £2000. Finally, for about
£5000 you can buy a machine which will read out loud anything that you put
on it. I have used one of these and it was very impressive; I put a
scientific paper on it and it read it off almost faultlesly. I'm not quite
sure what the American invention is, but people with macular degeneration
all tend to use their peripheral retina more, and you can leard to target
things onto it by looking slightly off centre.
If you want, I can ask our LVA dept for more details for you.
Kind regards
Dr Stephen J Doyle
