No longer true, I'm afraid. A DoH clarification about 18 months ago said that
if the patient requested it then we could issue both a private script and an
NHS script. Some GP's actually programme their systems to alert them to the
cheaper scripts and give them the option of private script and or NHS. We
decided that it was part of the thin end of the wedge of privitisation. If
everyone was to do it then the NHS would be a couple of UKP1,000,000's out of
pocket, script charges would go up and or service go down. We feel that
unless a direct request is made by the patient then we will not issue a
private script ( apart from a few things that the NHS does not allow).
