It is only some of the PC world that has tried to avoid PS; almost
all UNIX, MAC and other serious systems can handlel it. It is a
de facto standard in the academic world. If you want to be part of
this, there is little choice. It is far more flexible than Acrobat
format, more platform/application independent than HTML (which has
at least three "standards" plus proprietary extensions); things may
change, but most editors/WP systems don't produce HTML, the produce
postscript.
On a PC, under OS/2 or Linux Ghostscript works a treat; don't forget
thta many limitations are due to the OS rather than this establised
standard.
