I have recently been approached by a GP Registrar who would like to gain
admittance to the Obstetric list via the old fashioned "Red Book" method of
spending a certain amount of time attached to the Labour Ward and a certain
amount of time in consulatnt clinics before being signed up by the consultant.
This request was met with some contempt by the local obstetricians who say that
it has not been approved by the RCOG for many years. Also they do not see
someone as competent to provide Obstetric services after this attachment. They
do not seem to see an individual GP's professional understnading of his own
competences and responsibilities as having any bearing on the matter. Our local
Medical Adviser would be happy to use the old system.
Has anyone any experience or helpful comments?
