I cannot help thinking back to the days when I started general practice.
Several winters were hellish because of measles epidemics. Now I cannot
remember the last time I saw a case of even mumps. Whither, rubella,
whooping cough? I used to tear around every day to get the visits
done because nobody had transport to come to me. Fewer had telephones
so problem solving that simple way was out. Getting an old person
into hospital was virtually impossible. There are countless other
ways our workload has diminished, but I don't hear any one offering
to hand any money back for the work we no longer have to do.
Set your core work and somebody will come along and find a cure
or a better way of doing it or somebody to do it cheaper.
I intend to maximise my jack-of all-trades role
and keep myself indispensible.
