You are probably thinking about the new "voice modems". One example
is the Soundblaster model.
This is like a sound card which you insert into a free ISA slot on
your pc and it will handle data, voice and fax functions as well as
voice mail.
I read a review of the different models and the merits of the
relevant software. I'll try to dig it up for you.
Of course, all of the above could be what you are not looking for!!
