I have just refused to prescribe heparin (and supervise a patient's pre-
operative withdrawal from long term warfarin) for a locum surgical
consultant at a local hospital. The patient presented a letter, saying
"..it will be necessary for you to stop your Warfarin... I would like
you to start taking instead on the (date) Heparin, which you will
continue until you come into hospital. It will be necesary for you to
contact Dr (my partner who's on holiday) to change to the subcutaneous
heparin"
When I contacted the surgeon concerned to tell him I could not and would
not do this, he assured me that he had had no problems in the three
other hospitals (and these were all good, major hospitals) where he had
worked in getting GPs to do this.
Can anyone tell me, *is* this part of "usual medical services"? How many
of you have been asked to do this? and how many have done it?
Just curious - I'll still say no..;-)
