I read that the drug she took was Metrodin (human menopausal
gonadotrphin).
Against my better judgement, I have prescribed drugs on the NHS
for patients undergoing NHS and private infertility treatment.
Just last week, I wrote a prescription for drugs which totalled
more than 1000 pounds in cost. Yikes!
I read in the paper today all about the woman in question's
past social and medical history. Why was I not surprised to
also learn that the News of the Screws paid her a hundred
grand?
It's easy to point the finger after the event but one surely
has to ask what the infertility clinic were up to. The woman
had a miscarriage at Christmas, for goodness sake. She was
hardly infertile.
OTOH, my wife is an obs/gyn and recently went back into the
NHS after working for 4 years at a private infertility
clinic. Hmmm, I could tell you a few stories, but basically,
I reckon the ethical comittees which decide who does and
who doesn't get treatment might be better termed 'unethical'
committees.
Why can I never spell committteees correctly?
Anyway, my personal view is that there should be no infertility
treatment on the NHS (except simple baseline investigations)
and that many 'couples' seeking infertility treatment would
be better advised to seek the help of a psychologist.
However, this is *my* personal view. It does not reflect the
views of my wife, our dog, the NHS, my partners, or anyone
else. I think I can live with it.
Take care everybody!
