Would some numbers help.
A 9.6K modem moves 1kBytes/second; so a mail message which is
typically again about 1Kbyte, ties up your line for 1 second. At
peak-time trunk-call rates, one second of line time will cost a
fraction of a penny.
A disk drive, even an older one, has a capital cost of say stlg1 per
MByte, and costs about 20p per Mbyte per year to operate (most of
that is depreciation). So putting a 1Kbyte mail message on your disk
ties up about100 MilliPennies of capital, and kept for one year will
cost you about 20 MilliPennies.
The typical member of GP-UK costs someone, usually the UK tax-payer
(most of us on GP-UK are working in some public sector activity),
about stlg30 per hour to run. If it takes him/her say 12 seconds to
decide that a mail message (like this one) is not worth keeping, or
even reading (but you have to read it to find out it is not worth
reading) then that is a cost of 10P, in the order of 100 times the
other cost.
