SMART CARDS A DUMB IDEA - PRIVACY WATCHDOG
An Ontario plan to introduce a so-called smart card to replace drivers'
licencess and health and welfare cards could be "a giant leap backwards" for
personal privacy, Ottawa's privacy watchdog warns.
The smart cards have the potential to destroy our privacy or enhance it,
Privacy Commissioner said in his annual report to Parliament...
Phillips quoted Ontario Health Minister Jim Wilson as saying feb 12 the
province's new system would be "like VISA or MasterCard where they can tell
where you were an hour ago and how much you spent and would be a great step
forward for the health system in Ontario."
"Perhaps a great step forward for efficient administration of the health
care system," Phillips said, "but ceratinly a giant leap backwards for
autonomy and privacy."
