I have had one case of a pregnant patient who developed a mild form of
Chickenpox for the second time following exposure during her mid-trimester.
She was reviewed and investigated by the tertiary care genetics centre and
all seemed well. The child was born with good apgars. Unfortunately as
time went on it became very apparant the child has marked developmental
delay. The child is almost 18 months old and is at the level of 6-8 months.
I'm not sure what the virologists think of that.
Now, I have a pregnant patient who is in her first trimester, who has had
chickenpox as a child and has recently been exposed to a child with
chickenpox. I have suggested checking her antibody titres with a 3-4 week
interval. What do others think? There must be lots of women in this group.
