I'm trying to solve a simple problem in Excel. Unfortunatley I can't :-(
I have 2 adjacent columns of data. Each has a series of text string entries as shown:
Column Duty Shift GP
weekday eve. Linda
weekday eve. Carol
weekday night Linda
saturday day Mary
saturday night Mike
weekday eve. Bob
Weekday night Mike
I want to count the shifts that each GP does
dead easy, use Countif(GP"Mike") for Mike & so on (Mike = 2)
Now I want to count the number of Weekday nights Mike does....
this relates the GP column to the Shift column. I can do this easily
manually - but cannot find a database function that does the same job
(ie check col GP for "Mike", if Mike = true, then check col Shift, if
shift = "Weekday nights" then let total = total+1 & move on up or down
the column, returning the grand total at the end of the column as the
value of the function).
This should be a doddle in Access or some other database.
Come on, tell me, what have I not done???
PS How on Erath did I get into The Isaac Newton Institute with such
rudimentary logical & analytical inadequacies???
