Having lived in Glasgow all my life, (I think Alan may be more
familiar with the East coast) and being fairly able to
understand the lingo I am pretty certain (although never entirely
100percent sure) that "The dry boak" refers to retching.
Occasionally (just occasionally) it refers to coughing, or retching
brought on by coughing. Generally helped by advice to 1-Stop Drinking
and 2-Stop Smoking

I was sure that a consutant at Southern General (Dr Crean) still used a computer
program for diagnosis in abdo pain.
I don't know if he has retired now or not.
