Yes - agree totally. And in the following table the top bits are the
most important to sort out by negotiation and agreement. The choice of
communications protocol and WAN is relatively unimportant and (at least
for the WAN) should be a matter for consumer choice. Unfortunately IMG
tends to have its priorities in the reverse order.
To represent the concepts Read (plus free text)
To replace the paper forms EDIFACT
To sign and seal Secure EDIFACT (digital signatures plus
encryption)
Place in envelope & post X400 (IMG choice) or MIME/SMTP? or stick
with Kermit
Distribution service Wide Area Network with message handling
capability (Take your pick!!)
Thus for example the GP Provider links project will be shifting
pathology results using Read v2 - end to end with proper integrated
management software to enable practices to follow their normal routines
of checking / ordering further action etc. 4 byte users no problem as
all the Read codes being used are the same once the terminal dot has
been removed
