I asked the nephrologists the same question - and the answer given was
'probably yes, though phase contrast is easier'. At the time they were
looking at funding a trial in Northumberland to compare Practices using
'ordinary' microscopes with an intervention group supplied with phase
contrast ones - don't know if it ever went ahead though

Best thing is to get hold of a 1 mm3 counting chamber (around 10 ukp).
The technique I was shown is to then fog this by breathing on it and
'stick' a cover slip over the chamber. Then put a drop of urine onto the
edge and this is drawn in by capillary action.
