NB: Please reply to me rather than to the list.
Good morning all,
Can anybody help - I have a colleague, and personal friend, who has
now been off work for just over 6 months. To cut a very long story
short she is an insulin dependant diabetic female, late thirties with
?? mild asthma. Unfortunately, that is where the problem is. After
many months she was referred to hospital for consultation. Consultant
stated at exam (5 mins after 2hr wait!) that it was all 'in her mind'
but that he'd request lung function tests just to make sure.
Lung function tests were aborted half way through as capacity
decreased by two thirds and had triggered an asthma attack.
Radiographer had to give salbutamol (after gaining Dr's consent)
before continuing.
On returning to Consultant for follow up appt, she was told it was
all psychosomatic and that her lungs were fine. She came away with
the impression that she was making it all up and not to be so silly
and to go home and leave them alone.
She is now still off work, wheezing and unable to talk without
needing salbutamol. She hasn't left the house, apart from visiting the
Dr in 6 months and is getting very depressed. Her GP has said
that she will refer her elsewhere if she wishes and that's where
you all come in.
Can anybody recommend
a) a specialist in asthma (preferably in the Lancashire area), and
b) advise as to what she should be doing in the meantime
On the positive side, she thinks her GP is wonderful and can't say
enough about her. :-)
Sorry for the length of this missive - thanks in advance for the
help.
Nikki
PS As a chronic asthmatic myself, only taken seriously after months
of problems, as I do not conform to the norm. - I realise that I am
probably biased where this is concerned, so an objective view would
be gratefully received.
