Yes, Choice and opportunity (C&O) and the legislation which follows it
will allow GP Practices to employ other GPs with much greater
flexibility than allowed by the very restrictive assistant arrangements.
C&O would allow the NHS contract to be held by the practice rather than
individual GPs. It would allow much greater flexibility in both skill
mix and employment arrangements for example C&O talks about given
practices the freedom to employ a nurse practitioner rather than an
additional GP where circumstances make the is better choice. It will
also
be much easier to make sensible arrangements for part timers and 24
responsibility.
C&O is quite short and worth reading.
