Copied below is a document proposing internet access of sorts to
training practices in Glasgow. Thought folk maybe interested.
Forwarded document follows.
-----------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND
All training practices have been offered an Intemet standard 28,800
bps modem. Currently 129 trainers or their representatives have
attended a one day course on Medline searching. They have also been
provided with a variety of software introducing them to the wider
world of the Intemet. Anecdotal evidence suggests that few have taken
up this offer, either due to cost or justifiable concern regarding
inadequate understanding of this medium.
PROPOSAL
All 155 training practices will be offered to be part of a network
providing direct electronic communication among all practices and
centrally with the department. Each individual practitioner will be
offered his or her own E-mail address and all correspondence within
the network will be fully confidential with the department providing
its own web server, thus ensuring no interference from outwith.
Access to the wider Internet will also be possible. The cost of this
service will be approximately £ 1 0 per practice per month
irrespective of the number of doctors in the practice.
Some benefits of this service are as follows:
Electronic distribution of audit software upgrades.
Electronic conferencing.
Direct, communication between and within practices.
Rapid and secure dissemination of departmental information.
Multiple E-mall addresses per practice.
Dedicated discussion groups on specialist subjects.
