Purchased pagers are "Calling Party Pays". Be very careful when you
buy pagers like this, as you could be costing yourselves money!
For a rented pager, you pay £x/per month, but local phone calls to
deposit messages. For purchased pagers, you pay a one off fee (and
maybe ongoing rental of the bureau service after the first year), and
your callers pay up to £1.50 for the pleasure of leaving you a
message. It is usually in the region 30-50p, but there is one
particular tariff that is that high.
If your surgery is paging you often, you should be renting without a
doubt (remember that means you're paying for both halves!)
If you belong to a Doctor's co-operative or answering service that is
using some kind of automated paging to send you call details direct to
your pager, then this is not possible with CPP pagers, only with
rental pagers.
Best wishes
James
