I wouldn't put the "For Sale" signs just yet though!
There are several ways of deciding the level of payments to Doctors working
Co-op shifts ranging from those who pay very little and earn fixed shift
payments but have to work an equal share of the rota and those where there is
no such compulsion and inevitably one has to use market forces to attract the
workers. This is probably just another example of a Co-op having to pay very
high rates just to get members to work unattractive sessions although I agree
the figure looks an order of magnitude too high.
The other side of the equation is, of course, what the members are paying for
the services to their patients. A Co-op can basically agree to pay its working
Doctors any amount it chooses so long as the members are willing to fund the
payments in call fees. I have yet to come across a Co-op which has the perfect
answer. EKDOC is paying UKP150 bonus plus consulting fees for a three hour
shift over the Christmas holiday financed by a UKP15/day surcharge per member.
