Just incase anyone's interested, I've done a search re: Vitamin C and the
Common Cold.
Most of the evidence to date suggests a 20 - 30% reduction in length
of symptoms of common cold (and a reduction in severity of syptoms) in those
people taking 1 gram or more of Vitamin C daily.
Early research from the 70's is flawed by inclusion of 'low-dose' therapy
and I could find no reports of serious side-effects from therapy.
Why aren't we recommending everyone takes regular Vitamin C ?
- Long-term consequences ????
PS. As an interesting aside, Ascorbic acid (2g/day) increases iron absorption
by a factor of 2 to 3 (single dose and split dose) so rather than after sex it
might be useful after a heavy period or two. Our practice nurses swear by
Vit C so they obviously don't all carry straw in their handbags :)
