I'm not sure a laptop is the best way to go unless one really does
need portable computing. If one is to work at home a desktop machine is
cheaper and easier to use with a full size keyboard, screen, sound
facilities etc. If one intends working on the move e.g. on trains, or
in a variety of different locations, or the data has to be carried
between two or more desktop machines a laptop may be the answer.

I don't know about EMIS specifically but generally one can use programs
like pcAnywhere, Carbon Copy or Reachout to control one computer from
another remotely and this is how my partners and I access our surgery
system from home.
