There are two other ways to configure your desktop. They are meant for
system administrators and such. Meddling with them can be dangerous as they
modify the user.dat portion of the Registry. If the Registry becomes
corrupted, you
may not be able to access your system.
1. Enable user profiles.
- in the passwords option in control panel, click user profiles tab.
- click the option named Users Can Customize Their Preferences And
Desktop Settings.
- click the options you want under User Profile Settings.
- shut down and restart computer.
- you will then see under windows directory a profiles directory -
one profile for each user
for your computer.
- see if you can find the offending file/icon there.
2. Use System Policy Editor
- install the system policy editor.
- poledit.exe can be found in the admin\apptolls\poledit directory
of your win95 CD.
- use add/remove program in the control panel, click windows setup
and click have disk.
- click browse and look for file as mentioned.
- in the have disk dialog box, make sure system policy editor is
checked and click install button.
- then run poledit.
For further info, please consult win95 resource kit - a microsoft press book.
Useful tip:
If for whatever reason, your win95 died! - cannot start up at all.
Diagnosis : System Registry is corrupted. (user.dat and system.dat
corrupted)
Windows95 depends on these two files for everything.
Boot your computer with the rescue diskette or any msdos bootable
diskette
Change to the windows directory on your harddisk.
type: attrib -s -h -r *.* (to reveal all the hidden files)
delete user.* (user.dat and user.da0 (backup file))
delete system.* (system.dat and system.da0 (backup file))
Restart your computer.
NOTE: If you don't remove these 4 files as mentioned before
reinstalling windows95,
you will still get the same problems as they are not overwritten.
