Ditto. With a name like mine, I've had dozens of variations over the
years - my receptionists are currently compiling a list, which passed
the 30 mark last week.
On the subject of British names sounding funny to foreigners; my
boarding house master in my schooldays had the surname Mortimer,
which is very close to the Punjabi for "fat mother" - a very fitting
alternative, as it happened. Once I had persuaded my fellow inmates
that this was indeed the case, my street cred rose immeasurably.
