I've just "upgraded" my cpu for *nothing*!
I have a Gateway 2000 4DX250. It's over 2 years old. I've been wanting to
upgrade the processor for months. I've tried an AMD586133 but the
motherboard doesn't support 3.3v to the cpu socket, despite what the manual
says:-( Must be on the 4DX266 only (that would have been over 100ukp on the
original purchase price).
This evening I swopped the processor for a DX266 from work. Switched the
motherboard from 25Mhz to 33Mhz, and hey presto QAPlus diagnostics showed an
increase in direct video speed from 453.4 to 757.4 and an increase in the
maths whetstone speed from 86. to 11.4. But, the processor Dhrystones speed
was the same at 45.5k.
So, I just swopped the old "DX250" cpu back in without resetting the
motherboard to 25Mhz. Hey presto, no difference!
So, I've now got a DX266 for no cost:-) :-). What a shame I didn't know
about this before :-( :-(
If anyone has the same system try it. But I cannot accept responsibility if
anything goes wrong.
So happy with this, I've order an SGS Thomps DX4100 from Choice Peripherals,
plus a heat sink and fan - 26.33ukp :-), plus p&p plus vat:-(
