John Williams persuasively argues for using EDIFACT where appropriate as
it's the best we've currently got. I agree. However I recently read a
paper propounding the Good European Health Record (GEHR) and its
associated GEHR Exchange Format. Lots of details available at
http://www.chime.ucl.ac.uk
This standard apparently covers all patient-based systems and
communication, has been developed by a multi-country consortium in the
EU, and is allegedly to become the new CEN (EU) standard in this area.
Among its benefits is that it will handle transmission of images and can
retain the context of the data, i.e. who first attached an item of data
to the patient's record and when. (all this only if sending and
receiving systems comply with the GEHR spec.)
Anyway, apparently the Hull Uni Medical Informatics people are running a
pilot involving 40? GPs in Sheffield and a couple of Trusts. The GPs are
using specially-written GEHR software called PRISM. Anyone know more
about this? Sounds interesting. Rumour also has it that VAMP are
considering a system based on the GEHR model. True?
