We (a Vamp practice) have had about four mailshots asking if we want
to trial it. Two of these have been from our Health Authority, who
say that they are supporting the trial.
It's not apparent to me what the advantage would be to the patients
or to us.
OK, so the prescription _might_ be ready when the patient arrived at
the pharmacy, assuming that they actually go to the pharmacy that
they said they were going to go to.
But what about all the automatically pre-ordered items that have
been discontinued in the meantime, or those where the quantity
required varies (prn items)? It seems that we could just replace one
administration difficulty with another.
Our practice population is well scattered and many different
pharmacies are used - I can see more advantage to this type of
system in an area with a localised patient-pharmacy relationship.
And what about the pharmacist's costs - they're not offered free
systems, and I wonder whether we'll continue to get them free once
they're established??
