My initial reaction would be to ensure that a training strategy
underpins whatever technology is used, so that clinicians and other
practice staff know what they are doing with the data, and can plan
to make it work for them rather than being a burden to them.
Our area is beginning to get to grips with this, and the underlying
agenda from the Health Authority's point of view is as follows:
1 A phenomenal amount of money has been spent on computerising
practices - where's the payback for the HA?
2 The HA (Dept of Public Health) wants to get decent
epidemiological and research data out of GP systems, and has realised
that the data quality is currently poor.
3 GP Registration Links has been popular in this area, and
everyone is looking forward to IoS Links, notwithstanding the
Patients Not Paper changes. There are also pilot projects linking to
hospital pathology and appointments systems. These communications
projects are seen as crucial to getting GPs to use their systems more.
A training initiative is currently being tested, and there a Regional
Research Network is being set up which will also have information
management training as a major part of its strategy.
Hope this helps!
