Well, DIP are offering a combo PCMCIA card that supports Ethernet,
fax and 28.8 baud modem. The Ethernet mode can run any comms software
and any PDI, NDIS or IPX and packet drivers for a LAN. The unit comes
with full network drivers plus Compuserve and Pipex Dial internet
software.
Like other contributors to this august gathering, I see the need for
ISDN, but not the cost benefit when BT's pricing and the extra interface
equipment is considered. I guess by the time the cost equation is
fixed, there'll be a better more cost effective solution (high-speed
modems, cable access etc).
BTW, for the next development in the desktop, download Pointcast's
software at http://www.pointcast.com, and experience the new paradigm of
invited push media, information aggregation and the decorative desktop
interface (according to the Americans). And when it's not on-line, it
makes a great screen saver too!
