First, has Win95 detected the correct display card and monitor? Check these by
right-clicking a blank area of the desktop, then Properties/Settings/Change Display
Type. This same Display Properties dialog box has a number of other useful tabs,
including Appearance - select another desktop scheme to (hopefully) get back your
highlighting on menus.

It depends what is in them. Some settings are ignored, but others may interefere with
32 bit drivers and stop them loading. Rigt click My Computer/Properties/Performance.
It's worth checking all the settings within this dialog box for optimum performance.
At the bottom of the box it should say "Your system is configured for optimal
performance." If it doesn't, then usually it is because of of 16 bit drivers being
loaded, usually in CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT. Be aware that Win 95 glibly changes
these files on the fly, depending on what you are doing (different files load on
dropping out to MS-DOS mode, for instance. You can see exactly what is loaded by typing
MEM /C/P in an opened MS-DOS prompt window.
