The Computer Misuse Act makes it a specific criminal offence. Also, a
recent amendment in the Criminal Justice Act means that people who receive
and sell on information obtained in this way can also be prosecuted.
The first such case came through in July; a private eye who got information
from DVLA on the registered keeper of a vehicle (using, in fact, a false
pretext phone call, but the law's the same for hacking) got fined #1500 with
#500 costs.
Of course, the vigour with which the police will pursue a hacker varies
quite a lot from one force to another. Some, like the Met and Avon, have got
knowledgeable people. With others, you might have an uphill job educating
them about systems
